I have to retract most of the statements I have made about Speed Racer. I chalked the movie up to be absolutely horrible, the opening box office receipts only confirmed this opinion of mine, but I was totally wrong.
Well not a prefect movie by any means, it is an engaging, eye orgy of bright colours, fast cars, insane CGI (a good and bad thing) and the every lovely underused Christina Ricci who was so friggin' hot as Trixie.
All the actors did their best with what they had, but nailed the performance and looks of the original 60's cartoon. It has been years since I've seen John Goodman on screen and he looks completely at home with the Pops character, even Susan Sarandon looked at home.
The over use of CGI, in place of actually background set pieces was mildly annoying but it gave it the anime look and feel the Wachowski Bros were going for. Though I feel any fans over 30 years old might not enjoy it, the kids will cream themselves over it.
As I said, I was completely surprised by how enjoyable the film actually was. My only problems were the over use of CGI, and the fact that it didn't need to be over 2 hours long.
Speed Racer gets 3/5 stars.
